In 2023, the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan Danshui Church, the first Presbyterian Church in Northern Taiwan, celebrated its 90th anniversary of dedication. A few years ago, the exterior of the church and its surroundings had been lit up to meet the demand for tourism in the area, but the interior of the chapel had not yet been remodeled and renovated. In 2021, Cubee Lighting successfully came on the market with the top lighting technology in the industry. In 2022, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees enthusiastically shared with the church the latest in lighting technology and expressed his willingness to make a lighting dedication to improve the chapel’s lighting environment with the most advanced technology available. Lighting Planning and Evaluation

Our team conducted a comprehensive assessment of the 90-year-old church during several preliminary surveys and planning. In addition to studying the condition of the building, we also paid attention to the overall soft furnishings of the interior. This included stained glass, lecterns, tables and chairs, and other historical and artistic objects. A careful repainting and refurbishment was carried out, covering elements such as ceilings, wall coverings, tables and chairs, podium floors, and carpets. Finally, with AMO smart lighting system, the old church shines once again, combining the flavor of history with the light of modern technology.

Lighting Design Scene

According to the needs of the Danshui Church, we have designed the following main lighting scenes:

Worship lighting scene: the whole area is brightly lit with a white light color temperature of 5700K, imitating natural sunlight, welcoming the parishioners to come and enjoy the pleasant Sunday worship time together.

Dedication lighting scene: during the dedication, the seating area lights are reduced to 50% brightness, and the carefully created lighting focuses on the choir and the organist’s position, subtly leading the parishioners to focus on these two areas, naturally weaving a picture of reverence for the Lord and joyful dedication.

Theme lighting scene (Wedding, Christmas): during special festivals, the lighting is kept bright and high throughout the whole area, and the color temperature is adjusted to 3000-3500K, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance. Through the careful deployment of lights, parishioners will be able to leave unforgettable and beautiful memories here.

Communion lighting scene: the illumination and color temperature of the whole environment was lowered, but a certain level of illumination was maintained, which helped to relax the emotions and bring a calm and harmonious atmosphere. The lights in the pastor’s pulpit area were fully turned on to guide the parishioners’ attention to the celebration of Holy Communion by the pastor.

The Significance and Achievements of Remodelling

During the remodeling process, our team discovered that the ceiling of the chapel was tilted and collapsed and that the wooden roof beams supporting the structure had been corroded by termites. The church immediately listened to the report of the construction team and made a quick decision to adjust the works and initiate termite control and reinforcement measures. This process was not only a repair of the building, but also an adherence to the faith. With a conservative mindset, the church believes that it is safest to be in God’s love. The renovation was a testament to the faithfulness of the church and its perseverance and faith in difficult times.

After the renovation, the overall brightness of the chapel has been significantly improved, with clearer vision when reading from the pulpit, choir, and seating area. When the pastor delivers a sermon or conducts a worship service, people’s eyes naturally focus on the area where the light is concentrated, which not only enhances the visual experience but also enables each believer to listen to God’s word more attentively. This improved lighting creates a more focused, comfortable and solemn atmosphere for the entire auditorium and enhances the sanctity of the religious service.

In the silence of the night, we turned off the lights in the pews, and the faint glow of the lights gently reflected on the stained glass window frames, while the Bibles on the communion table were gently wrapped in a soft, low-light warm glow. As night falls over the church, passers-by gaze through the glass of the wooden doors into the interior of the church and feel the warmth of the light, as if they can touch the warmth and stability of God’s gift, and remain hopeful at all times. This moment is like a poem, a sacred and serene narrative told in soft light and shadow.
